AOC Selects Trident for New Internet-Connected DTV for the Brazil Market

Demonstrates Trident's Worldwide Platform and Connected TV Capability

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Sept. 27, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Trident Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq:TRID), a leading provider of set-top box and TV semiconductor solutions, today announced that its HiDTV® Pro-SXL system-on-a-chip (SoC) has been adopted in AOC's new series of Digital TVs for Brazil and other South American markets and has begun volume shipment. In 2010, Trident supported AOC's entry into the Brazilian digital TV market with its HiDTV Pro-SX1 solution and is now following up with the HiDTV Pro-SXL. This new platform provides the scalability required for AOC to address different segments of the DTV market ranging from standard DTV to DTVs with full IP capabilities. When coupled with Trident's FRC MEMC solution, AOC is able to extend the same design to address the high end 120Hz market as well.

"We are excited by the launch of this new family of AOC DTVs driven by Trident's HiDTV Pro-SXL, which can serve as a platform for both the conventional DTV and Connected TV," said Dirk Wieberneit, General Manager of TV BU at Trident. "It is a testament to the strong platform approach of AOC and their ODM partner, TPV, and to the system-level capability and flexibility of our SOC. Our solution enables the delivery of cloud-based services including on demand video, music and games to the living room and brings a rich array of multimedia content in the large screen form factor.  We appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with TPV for the development of the platform and are happy to contribute to their successful penetration of the fast-growing South American markets."

"Trident's HiDTV Pro-SXL provides the perfect combination of picture quality and internet connectivity," said Vincent Lin, Product Marketing Director for Own Brand BG, TPV. "Their software platform serves as the ideal foundation for AOC to develop value-added applications enabling AOC to differentiate their products in this fast growing region for DTVs. We look forward to growing our market share with this Trident based solution."

About the Trident HiDTV® Pro-SXL

Trident has developed a complete platform around the HiDTV Pro-SXL family that includes integrated hardware and software with built-in support for popular online services.

The SXL platform combines Trident's leading digital TV and picture-quality processing technology into one highly integrated SOC, delivering a production-ready design at a cost effective bill-of-material. This SOC delivers crystal clear video with 50/60Hz output and supports 3D TV formats using panels based on the patterned retarder technology, bringing the viewing experience of 3D TV at the cost effectiveness of the 50/60Hz platform.   To take advantage of the vast library of 2 D content, this SOC is capable of converting 2D to 3D, enabling viewers to enjoy their collection of DVDs and BlueRays in 3D.

HiDTV Pro-SXL, like other Trident SOCs, is encapsulated in an industry standard software platform. Such architecture facilitates modular application development, enables faster time-to-market, simplifies software updates for feature enhancements, and accelerates platform customization process for different regions of the world.
