HARTFORD, Conn., Oct. 17, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Tim Hollister, an environmental attorney and Partner at Shipman & Goodwin LLP in Hartford, Conn., will present a paper about the worldwide evolution of green building standards at the World Jurist Association's (WJA) 24th Biennial Congress on the Law of the World in Prague, Czech Republic.
Atty. Hollister is the first Shipman & Goodwin lawyer ever invited to speak at The Congress, which draws approximately 1,000 attorneys and judges from around the world. He will speak on October 27, 2011, in one of several presentations organized by the International Municipal Lawyers Association (IMLA). The theme of the 2011 conference is National Legal Cultures in a Globalized World.
Atty. Hollister, who co-chairs Shipman & Goodwin's Real Estate, Environmental and Land Use Practice Group, will present, "Black and White Issues in the Evolution of Green Building Standards." He will examine the varying definitions of green building around the world and discuss 12 critical policy and administrative issues that nations, regions, and private sponsor organizations make, confront and resolve as they adopt and implement green building programs. Atty. Hollister's paper reviews the variety of methods by which private organizations, nations, and regions promulgate green building standards. It then compares the major international green building programs such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), the European Union's Green Building Programme, and the U.K.'s BREEAM standard.
"My paper explains the key legal and policy steps in the evolution of green building, and presents a snapshot of the current international status of this still relatively new environmental movement," explains Atty. Atty. Hollister practices land use, environmental and municipal law at Shipman & Goodwin LLP, and handles a wide range of real estate and administrative law problems that arise in the context of land use and environmental matters. He has developed a national reputation in land use law and is widely recognized for his work in workforce and affordable housing development, wetlands regulation, and eminent domain.
Active in the development of green building standards in Connecticut, Atty. Hollister represents the first developer to propose a subdivision required by regulation to meet the Gold level of the National Green Building Standard (published by the Research Center of the National Association of Home Builders). He has lectured in Connecticut and in Washington D.C. about this work, and has attended continuing education classes about green building in the residential sector.
