Independence Blue Cross Names Elizabeth Williams to Senior Communications Position


PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 9, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Independence Blue Cross (IBC) announced the promotion of Elizabeth A.W. Williams to the new position of senior vice president and chief communications officer. She continues to report to Christopher Cashman, executive vice president and president commercial markets.

In this expanded role Williams oversees communications and brand strategy, advertising, media, public relations, communications planning, creative services, sponsorships, and events. 

"Liz's sharp eye for news, creative energy, and extensive communications and marketing experience have been essential to building our public relations function over the last few years," said Cashman. "In her expanded role as chief communications officer, Liz is now responsible for ensuring that we innovate and deliver clear, consistent, compelling communications about IBC's business strategy across all mediums and to all stakeholders."

Williams previously held the management position of vice president corporate and public affairs. 

Prior to joining IBC in 2005, Williams was principal of EW Communications, a communications strategy consulting firm whose clients included The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and The Pew Charitable Trusts. Previously, she served as the director of administration at The Pew Charitable Trusts.

Williams began her career as a reporter and editor. She spent 18 years at The Philadelphia Inquirer, starting as the editor of the Weekend section in 1973 and wrapping up as the vice president of marketing for Philadelphia Newspapers, Inc.

Williams earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Smith College and a master's in journalism from the Medill School at Northwestern University. She serves on the Strategic Communications Advisory Group for the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association. She is also on the board of the Arts & Business Council of Greater Philadelphia and the Marketing Committee of the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania.
