MIRAMAR, Fla., Feb. 9, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Spirit Airlines (Nasdaq:SAVE) today starts twice daily non-stop service between Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport and Las Vegas.

To celebrate, Spirit is offering $28.79 fares, which is a $9.00 base fare plus taxes and fees,* between Phoenix-Mesa and Las Vegas (each way based on round trip purchase) available today and tomorrow at www.spirit.com.

"The introduction of our ultra low fares between Phoenix-Mesa and Las Vegas gives travelers a convenient and affordable opportunity to take advantage of all that both of these destinations have to offer," says Spirit's Senior Director of Sales Michael Pewther. "Our cheap base fares give consumers the opportunity to save money on travel, and our range of optional services for a fee allows customers the freedom to choose only the extras they value."

"This is a great announcement for Valley travelers and one many people will be excited about," said Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Board Chairman and Town of Gilbert Mayor, John Lewis. "Las Vegas was determined as the top requested destination for people flying out of Gateway and I know this route will be a great benefit to both business and leisure travelers."

"We are excited to welcome Spirit's first flight from Las Vegas to Mesa," City of Mesa Mayor Scott Smith said. "Each new airline and each new destination shows that Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is excelling in the midst of and in spite of the struggling economy."

"We're happy that Spirit is launching service to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport," said Rosemary A. Vassiliadis, Deputy Director Clark County Department of Aviation. "Since 2007, cuts made by other carriers have reduced the number of seats flying in from Phoenix by approximately 20 percent. Spirit's new service will greatly narrow that gap, making it easier for travelers to fly between Las Vegas and the Phoenix area."

"The partnership between Las Vegas and Spirit Airlines began nearly a decade ago and continues to evolve and provide more options for travelers," said Cathy Tull, senior vice president of marketing for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
