D.C. Public Schools International Education Program Opens Global Gateways--Fundraiser to Occur During the 40th Anniversary Week of Nixon's Historic Trip to China

Global Kids Aims to Raise Support for Future International Learning and Travel

WASHINGTON, Feb. 19, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Four decades ago during the fourth week in February, Americans were transfixed to their TVs as they watched their President travel to China and end 25 years of separation between the two countries. In that spirit of recognizing overseas travel is key to understanding diverse cultures, Global Kids (www.globalkids.org) seeks to build new backing for its innovative international program for D.C. Public Schools.

Global Kids has reached underserved students in New York City for more than 20 years and now offers afterschool programs in two D.C. high schools: Columbia Heights Educational Campus and Friendship Collegiate Academy Public Charter School. It will soon grow to two more high schools as well as offer summer travel opportunities. Last year, students took part in a public affairs institute in Brazil.

Students in the New York City program have experienced a 90% high school graduation rate and close to 90% of participants attend college, many earning scholarships and financial support. Program leaders are seeing the same type of results in D.C. as well.

In order to continue and expand such international experiences, Global Kids and its D.C. Advisory Council will hold a fundraiser Wed., Feb. 22, at Touchstone Gallery. President Nixon's China trip occurred Feb. 21–28, 1972.
