"Inspiring by Example" Nationwide Funding for Student Video Projects

Application Deadline March 23, 2012 - Apply Now!

ATLANTA, March 8, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Center for America (www.centerforamerica.org) (CFA) announces "Inspiring by Example," a national funding project to help student teams develop short videos about their life-changing experiences with career and technical education programs – "the best way to tell the stories and spread the word from peer-to-peer about the doors that open as a result of career and technical skills programs and schools," says Steve Nowlan, CFA President and CEO.

Jobs, Hope, and Brighter Future Await . . .

Millions of young Americans – including school drop-outs – simply do not know about the direct benefits and exciting opportunities that come from technical and career education. As a result, millions of jobs over the next 10 years will go unfilled and millions of young people will fail to fulfill their potential for skilled, satisfying careers and economic self-sufficiency. CFA wants to fix the disconnect because "young people will listen and respond to other young people who share their concerns, doubts and life challenges – in their voice, told in their own way," says Nowlan.

What's the Program, and How Does My School Apply?

CFA is inviting current career and technical education student teams to produce short videos (5-10 minutes) that, in their own voices and style, tell the stories about how they are benefiting from the programs in which they are enrolled. From among the applications received by March 25, 2012, CFA will select teams to receive funding to cover out-of-pocket costs related to producing the videos. A panel of students and educators will select the best of the videos submitted to feature in CFA's national communications campaign throughout 2012 with national media, schools and non-profit organizations with the goal to inspire the next generation of young people to explore opportunities in their communities to enroll.

The registration/application form is available at www.centerforamerica.org – see the icon for "Inspiring by Example."

CFA, along with 40 companies, unions and trade associations and educational groups that have endorsed CFA's "10 By 20 Skills Campaign," is committed to spreading the word about the value of career and technical education to young people and people in career transitions, including at-risk youth who are unaware of training and counseling options available in their local communities. "The top concern for American employers is the availability of a skilled workforce," says Nowlan. "We believe today's youth should know that real opportunity that can change lives and create self-reliance and purpose is available – and other students can help show them the way."
