Dr. Bryan Massoud to Teach Endoscopic Discectomy Workshop March 30-31, Union, NJ

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Training Spotlights Growing Demand

FAIR LAWN, NJ and UNION, NJ--(Marketwire - Mar 23, 2012) - With access to more medical information online, spine surgery candidates are seeking surgeons providing minimally invasive endoscopic spine surgery (ESS) procedures that offer smaller incisions, faster recovery time and less pain and risk than traditional open spine surgery. Spine Centers of America founder and chief surgeon Bryan Massoud, MD, will be leading a two-day workshop to help orthopedic surgeons get started in endoscopic spine surgery on March 30-31 in Union, NJ at the Advanced Spine Surgery Center.

The course, sponsored by Richard Wolf Medical Instruments Corp., introduces surgeons to Endoscopic Discectomy and Endoscopic Rhizotomy techniques for treating a herniated disc. It will feature live surgery observation on Friday, along with lectures and hands-on cadaver instruction on Saturday.

Just as minimally invasive and endoscopic techniques are now the standard for many surgeries such as gall bladder removal, ESS is quickly becoming the standard of care for back surgery. Already, medical practices are seeing medically savvy patients migrating to practices offering these procedures.

"Enough time has passed and research has been done to show the efficacy of ESS," said Dr. Massoud. "Spine surgeons can't afford to delay adding it to their practice. It is my belief that open spine surgeries with long, painful, scar-filled recoveries will soon be a thing of the past."

"There is a steep learning curve for endoscopic spine surgery," Massoud noted. "It is important to learn the basics from extensively experienced surgeons who can guide in the hands-on techniques, instrumentation (which is dramatically different than that of traditional surgery), and other important elements, such as patient selection and anesthesia considerations. We strongly encourage surgeons to do workshops, then work closely with an experienced ESS surgeon partner where they can observe and assist in numerous procedures before attempting it themselves to ensure the maximum opportunity for success and lessen risk of complications."

Dr. Massoud will conduct additional training workshops, as well as teach endoscopic techniques at Cornell University and other institutions, on an ongoing basis.
