Charlottesville Takes Over D.C. Metro Station

12th and G Street Exit of Center City Station Will Feature Charlottesville Artwork for the Entire Month of April

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., April 2, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Riders of the D.C. Metro commuting through the Center City station will be exposed to artwork promoting the Charlottesville area throughout the month of April. The Charlottesville Albemarle Convention & Visitors Bureau purchased this valuable advertising space through a co-op program initiated by the Virginia Tourism Corporation. We are one of only seven destinations participating in this program.

The artwork is located throughout the 12th and G Street exit of the Center City metro station. It features images evoking different attractions of the Charlottesville area such as the Downtown Mall, vineyards and the great outdoors. Other artwork promote the Presidents Passport program, inaugurated in January and designed to build on the excitement surrounding the opening of the new landmark Smithsonian/Monticello exhibition opening in D.C. and encourage visitors to explore the extensive history and "intersection of rural lifestyle and urban sophistication" in Charlottesville, Albemarle, and surrounding areas.

"The Washington, D.C. area is a primary target for us," said Kurt Burkhart, Executive Director of the CACVB, "and participation in Virginia Tourism Corporation's station domination program was a natural fit. The total daily ridership is over 50,000, which does not account for the thousands of transfers made within the stations. Over 1.4 million impressions would be expected for a one-month advertising period in this station, which is fantastic, as Washingtonians start planning their summer vacation, or are thinking about possible location for their next group event such as meeting or even wedding."

Photos of the artwork posted in the metro station can be uploaded by visiting http://www.visitcharlottesville.org/media/media-tours/ and choosing the DC Metro Station Domination April 2012 category.

In addition to providing a wealth of information on the area to individual visitors, the CACVB assists tour operators, meeting planners, reunions and other groups to find attractions, restaurants, hotels, and other visitor related businesses. Its mission is "to enhance the economic prosperity of City and County by promoting, selling and marketing the City of Charlottesville and County of Albemarle, as a destination, in pursuit of the meetings and tourism markets."
