Five Schools Honored Nationally for Excellence in Family Engagement

National PTA Announces Family-School Partnership Awards Recipients

ALEXANDRIA, VA--(Marketwire - Apr 4, 2012) - When families are engaged, students succeed. That's why National PTA is recognizing five schools with the Phoebe Apperson Hearst Family-School Partnership Awards. The awards recognize local PTAs that have effectively implemented National PTA's National Standards for Family-School Partnerships.

Through the implementation of the standards, PTAs across the country are working to further family engagement, and thereby increase student academic achievement, graduation rates and participation in post-secondary education. The Hearst Awards recognize PTAs who have put strong practices into place to involve parents and families into the lives of their schools.

Mantua Elementary School PTA in Fairfax, Va., earned the highest distinction by receiving the Phoebe Apperson Hearst-National PTA Outstanding Family-School Partnership Award. They created a human relations committee to help bridge the gap between the school and the families of students in the community which speak more than 40 different languages. The committee now has translators for school publications to help keep families of students informed of the school's progress, programs and events. In addition, the PTA implemented a mentorship program and extracurricular activities for students, as well as service projects for the elderly, families in need and sick children in the community.

Mantua Elementary PTA truly understands that bringing family engagement into the school can positively impact student success. As a part of the award, the PTA will receive two all-expense paid trips to this year's 116th Annual National PTA Convention in June where they will be recognized with $2,000.

The following PTAs will be recognized with the Family-School Partnership Award of Merit for demonstrating an outstanding job in each of the six standards:

  • 23rd District PTA, Riverside, California
  • James G. Blaine Elementary PTA; Chicago, Illinois
  • Herberich Primary School PTA; Copley-Fairlawn, Ohio
  • Cache Elementary South PTA; North Logan, Utah

This year, 123 applications representing 25 states were received in consideration for the Phoebe Apperson Hearst Award for Family-School Partnerships Awards.
