In the book, cancer researcher Ryan Matthews gave up his search for a cure for the disease after his wife and children died in a plane crash five years earlier. Living in the Bahamas, he happens to meet an attractive fellow scientist, Jordan Carver. She tells him of her plan to open a clinic in Mexico where terminally ill patients can receive experimental treatments. The very night the two meet, the aunt and uncle who raised Jordan die, apparently in an explosion.
