Cumming implant dentist and periodontist, Dr. Shelly E. Montes, announced that she actively supports the Georgia Mission of Mercy (GMOM) as part of her practice's commitment to giving back to the community.

Georgia Mission of Mercy provides free dental clinics to patients in need. The program is run by the Georgia Dental Association and Georgia Dental Association Foundation for Oral Health. The first outreach clinic, held August 12-13, 2011, served more than 2,179 Georgians. As part of the dental volunteers, Dr. Montes and GMOM helped provide more than $1.5 million in free services, including cleanings, teeth extractions, filings and root canal treatments.

"I'm proud to volunteer my time with the Georgia Mission of Mercy," said Dr. Montes. "I am a firm believer that everyone deserves access to quality dental care, regardless of where they live or how much they make. GMOM volunteers are compassionate, dedicated and moved by the spirit of giving. I'm honored to work in the company of such amazing volunteers."

Dr. Montes cited several moving emails that GMOM has received from patients, thanking the organization for its free dental care and gum disease treatment. According to Dr. Montes, one 32-year old patient wrote that she had never received dental care her entire life. At age 32, her teeth had begun to rot, and individuals looked down on her as if she had a drug addiction, due to her rotting teeth. Thanks in part to the treatment that she received from GMOM, this patient now has the confidence to pursue a degree and change her life.

"This moving story is just one example of the many that we heard during and after the clinic," said Dr. Montes. "It underscores the importance of giving back. I'm proud to volunteer my time with GMOM."

In addition to Dr. Montes' work with GMOM, she is also an avid athlete. Dr. Montes has completed triathlons and Iron Girl races, and encourages all her patients to be physically active as part of a healthy lifestyle.

"Regular, physical activity is an important part of a healthy, balanced lifestyle," said Dr. Montes. "I always tell my patients to brush and floss daily, and to break a sweat each day, too. Basic dental care, flossing and exercise go hand-in-hand for a healthy smile!"
