Track of the Olympics to serve as the surface for the SEC track and field championships

BATON ROUGE, La., May 10, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Mondotrack, the official track of the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics, will once again be underfoot for an NCAA Division I conference championship meet. This weekend, the 2012 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be contested on the acclaimed track.

The competition will take place May 10-13 at Louisiana State University's Bernie Moore Track Stadium. Recognized as one of the finest track venues in the United States, the historic, 5,680-seat facility features Mondotrack, the state-of-the-art track from Mondo, the global leader in the sports flooring market. Installed in 2010, the track replaced a 10-year-old polyurethane surface and a subsurface that was more than 30 years old.

Among the most important requirements for the replacement track were that it could stand up to Baton Rouge's underground water tables and the challenging soil composition below the stadium floor, which are caused by the venue's location near the Mississippi River. University officials also opted for Mondo because they felt LSU's elite and Olympic-caliber student-athletes would benefit by training on the same surface that would be used at the next Olympic Games.

Mondotrack provides the optimum blend of speed, safety and comfort for both high-speed competition and training. It converts the maximum amount of force generated by athletes' foot strikes to energy for maximum energy return, which helps athletes achieve faster times compared to running on other surfaces. Five world records were set on the Mondotrack at the Beijing Games in 2008.
