Pathways.org Notes Success With Residency Program Presentations

Nonprofit Organization Educates Residents on Early Motor Delays in Two Month Old Infants

CHICAGO, May 22, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Pathways.org, a nonprofit educational foundation, has earned outstanding marks on its two month motor presentation to residency programs. The organization received a 99% referral rating, while 88% of attendees recommended adding the information to their current curriculum.

The materials for the presentation were taken from a course developed in conjunction with the American Academy of Pediatrics to assist health professionals in detecting signs of an early motor delay in infants as early as two months of age. The number of children with early motor delays has increased dramatically in the past 25 years. Members of the AAP Council on Children with Disabilities estimate as many as 400,000 children born each year are at risk for some form of early motor delay.

"I've seen the presentations and when the videos are shown to the residents, you can see the connection of the video to the residents. You can see the 'aha!' moment," noted Dr. John Sarwark Head of Orthopedic Surgery Martha Washington Foundation for Handicapped Children and co-chair of the Pathways.org Medical Round Table. "The video material that is on the web through Pathways.org is a rich resource worldwide."

The course boasts four films addressing Tummy Time, positional torticollis, typical versus atypical development, and communicating with parents. Each film has a corresponding handout as well as seven additional handouts to guide residents through the course.

Pathways.org presented the course to 34 Pediatric Residents at Chicago area hospitals and three presentations to local Physician Assistant and Pediatric Nurse Practitioners programs since June 2010.

Due to the success of the presentations, Pathways.org has replicated the course on USB flash drives and is piloting a "Course to Go" for free to those who educate healthcare professionals and are interested in sharing the course with their residents and peers. Pathways.org is also planning to develop additional courses for four and six months of age.

Those interested in receiving a "Course to Go" USB bracelet can contact friends@pathways.org. All USB bracelets are free of charge for educators of health professionals.  Additional educational resources, links, checklists and tools for both parents and health professionals can be found on the Pathways.org website, www.pathways.org.
