Vancouver Chiropractor Completes Half Iron Man, Credits Strong Spine for Success

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, June 24, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Dr. Trevor Kilian, a Vancouver chiropractor and owner of Kilian Chiropractic, is raising awareness about the importance of proactive wellness care for athletic training. Dr. Kilian and his wife, Lauren recently completed a Half Iron Man race as part of Saunders Subaru Victoria Triathlon on June 17th with a race times of 4:53 and 5:23, respectively. Dr. Kilian credits their success to chiropractic adjustments and back exercises that build a strong, healthy spine. Dr. Kilian is working to educate recreational athletes about the importance of incorporating spine strengthening exercises and posture correction into their training programs. The chiropractor says that core strengthening is an important component to any proactive wellness program. Benefits include improved posture and reduced risk for back injuries.

"Chiropractic care is not just for individuals struggling with chronic pain," said Dr. Kilian. "A proactive approach to wellness helps competitive athletes build a strong foundation for success. When the spine is properly aligned, the entire body is optimized for superior performance."

In preparation for the race, Dr. Kilian received regular chiropractic adjustments to help ensure proper alignment during training. According to Dr. Kilian, repetitive motions used during running, cycling and other sports can lead to misalignments in the body. Without proactive care, these misalignments can develop into serious health problems.

"Wellness care helps the body function at its best," said Dr. Kilian. "Regular spine strengthening back exercises and corrective exercises help build strong core muscles. A strong core protects the spine and improves posture. This reduces the risk for injuries and muscle strains not only during athletic training, but also during daily activities."

For example, Dr. Kilian cited poor posture while at work as a common cause for back pain and injuries. "All too often, many of our patients spend our days hunched over computers," said Dr. Killian. "Sitting hunched over a desk compresses space in the lower spine, which increases the risk for a herniated disc or lower back injury. Proper ergonomics and posture correction decreases strain on the lower back, especially the lumbar spine."

Dr. Kilian follows a whole body approach to wellness and injury treatment. This philosophy means that the chiropractor addresses the underlying cause for injuries as well as naturally managing pain symptoms. In addition to helping patients recover from an injury, Dr. Kilian also focuses on optimizing a patient's overall well-being.

"When treating a patient, my goal is to help the patient heal and also improve overall health," said Dr. Kilian. "This starts with a postural assessment. Many people are unaware that simple changes to their posture and sitting habits can significantly reduce back pain and help improve overall well-being."

Dr. Kilian provides both hands-on and instrument-based adjustments to treat back pain, neck pain, correct posture, and improve athletic performance.

The chiropractic care center treats patients from downtown Vancouver, Coal Harbor, West End and Bentall.
