Birmingham Chiropractor Announces Successful Treatment for Headaches

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., July 1, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Back on Track Chiropractic in Birmingham, AL announced that the practice has had significant success using chiropractic adjustments to help people suffering from headaches and migraines. According to chiropractor Dr. Scott Duca, a misalignment in the cervical spine can trigger headache pain. Adjustments help restore alignment, reducing pressure on muscle trigger points and delicate nerves, alleviating headache pain. According to the chiropractor, many people who suffer from headaches may mistakenly blame work stress or caffeine intake, when the real culprit is a spinal misalignment.

"Many people dismiss headaches as a reoccurring annoyance often due to several environmental factors," said Dr. Duca. "However, there may be underlying mechanical problems aggravating this pain."

According to Dr. Duca, when the cervical vertebra slips from its normal position, it may compress the nerves and place stress on the smaller muscles of the upper neck. If this muscle spasms, it can affect the pain-sensitive dura mater that covers the brain.

"Majority of patients suffer from tension headaches, which is an achy, dull pain on one or both sides of the head," said Dr. Duca. "Many patients are surprised to learn that "subluxations" or misaligned bones, in the upper back and neck are actually the cause of their pain."

A whiplash injury can also trigger headache pain. According to Dr. Duca, trigger points in the Sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle on the side of the neck can cause a tension headache.

"Restoring alignment to the cervical spine alleviates pressure on muscle trigger points, providing long-term relief from headache pain," said Dr. Duca. "A car accident injury, personal injury, or simply bad posture can all contribute to spinal misalignment. As a chiropractor, my job is to help identify this problem and correct it, while enhancing overall wellness."

Dr. Duca provides chiropractic treatment for migraines. These intense, throbbing headaches are typically accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light or noise. Migraines are caused by a constriction of the blood vessels to the brain. However, the underlying cause for this constriction is not fully understood.

"While the underlying triggers for migraines are not fully understood, a combination of lifestyle changes and adjustments can make a significant difference for patients," said Dr. Duca. "Adjustments to the two upper cervical vertebrae and thoracic spine can correct irritants, which helps reduce the occurrence of future migraines."

Dr. Duca treats patients as part of his whole body wellness program. He aims to improve a patient's overall wellness through lifestyle and nutrition counseling.

Dr. Duca has served the greater Birmingham community, including Homewood, Vestavia, Mountain Brook and Hoover, for over 15 years. In addition to chiropractic treatments for headache pain, Dr. Duca provides natural pain management and injury rehabilitation for patients suffering from back pain, neck pain, car accident injuries, and other chronic pain.
