Venice Chiropractor Urges Sports Injury Patients to Seek Prompt Care

VENICE, Fla., July 29, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Theriault Chiropractic in Venice, FL is raising awareness about the importance of properly treating sports injuries. According to chiropractor Dr. Theriault, many individuals sustain sports injuries during the summer months. Common injuries include tennis and golf elbow, a herniated disc, or knee pain. Seeking prompt care for these injuries helps avoid the buildup of scar tissue, which Dr. Theriault says can aggravate pain and block healing.

Chiropractor Dr. James Theriault is encouraging amateur athletes to seek prompt treatment for summer sports injuries. According to Dr. Theriault, many injury victims delay seeking treatment, hoping the pain will simply go away by itself. This can be dangerous and lead to the formation of scar tissue, which blocks the healing process.

"A sports injury requires prompt treatment to prevent long-term health problems," said Dr. Theriault. "Even a minor strain or sprain needs proper care. In many cases, back pain or shoulder pain may be symptomatic of a larger problem affecting the whole body. The sooner a chiropractor can diagnose any underlying injury, then the more we can do to help the body safely heal."

Dr. Theriault says common summer sports injuries include golf or tennis elbow, lower back pain, and knee pain. Golf or tennis elbow is a repetitive motion injury caused by strains to the tendon. An improper motion while swinging a golf club or tennis racquet can strain the tendons. Patients may also experience shoulder pain.

"When treating a sports injury, my goal is two-fold: provide immediate relief and identify the underlying cause for pain," said Dr. Theriault. "An untreated spinal misalignment may be a contributing factor for golf elbow or shoulder pain. Restoring proper alignment along with corrective care exercises helps relieve pain and avoid future injury."

The Venice chiropractor also provides chiropractic care for back pain. According to Dr. Theriault, a slip and fall while running, an accidental impact on the playing field, or wear and tear over time can all contribute to chronic pain.

"If a disc in the back is out of alignment, it may compress nearby nerves," said Dr. Theriault. "An untreated mechanical misalignment will continue to cause a patient pain. Chiropractic adjustments are a gentle, hands-on treatment for restoring precise alignment to the body. By correcting the underlying cause for pain, we also help reduce the risk for future injuries."

Dr. Theriault emphasized that prompt diagnostic care is essential to treating a sports injury. While some people may wait for an injury to simply 'heal itself,' Dr. Theriault cautions a 'wait and see' approach is ineffective and may even be dangerous.

"Without prompt treatment, scar tissue will form," said Dr. Theriault. "Scar tissue prevents the body from properly healing itself and also exacerbates pain. Prompt treatment provides immediate pain relief and promotes long-term wellness."

In addition to sports injury rehabilitation, Theriault Chiropractic also provides comprehensive pain management and wellness programs.
