AERT Announces 2nd Quarter 2012 Results

Sales Up 34%, Overall Performance Improving

SPRINGDALE, Ark., Aug. 10, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Advanced Environmental Recycling Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB:AERT), a leading plastic recycler and manufacturer of green building products announced today that sales for the quarter ended June 30, 2012 were $23.6 million, up 34% from $17.6 million for the second quarter of 2011. This follows a much improved 1st quarter in which sales increased 44.9% over the prior year. Both the ChoiceDek® and MoistureShield® brands contributed to the sales volume growth with increases to existing customers and additional MoistureShield distribution. Limited sales of green resins (recycled plastic) were also initiated during the period.

Second quarter gross margin improved 6.6 percentage points from 2011 primarily as a result of plant efficiencies relating to higher production volume.

Selling and administrative costs for the quarter were up $0.6 million due to increased employee costs, sales commission, advertising, and professional fees.

The company recorded operating income of $2.3 million, a $2.1 million increase from the quarter ended June 30, 2011.

Commenting on the results, Joe G. Brooks, CEO of AERT noted, "Our sales continue to grow as a result of increased distribution and customer sell through efforts to a wider customer base. International sales also are growing. Our AERT team has successfully introduced several new products this year, with more on the horizon. Customer reception and acceptance is very positive. Our AERT manufacturing associates are also focused on reducing costs and improving efficiencies. Phase II of our Watts, OK recycling facility is nearing completion and we soon expect to be selling increased levels of recycled plastic to other manufacturers."

AERT will host their first quarter conference call and webcast on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 beginning at 11:00 am (EDT)/10:00 am (CDT) to discuss the results.
