A New Japanese Subsidy Program for Projects Promoting Asian Site Location in Japan

Applications Due on Nov. 19, 2012 (Noon, Japan Time)


SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 31, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) is pleased to announce a new Japanese subsidy program targeting projects that promote a new Regional Headquarters or R &D site in Japan.

The key objectives of this program are (1) to sustain and strengthen high-value-added business sites in Japan and (2) to achieve sustainable growth of the Japanese economy. The program will support internationally-operated companies to establish new high-value-added sites in Japan such as Regional Headquarters or R &D Sites. Such establishments have been proven to have a significant impact on the Japanese economy. The program also aims at strategically and proactively inviting and building high-value-added business functions that match the strength of the Japanese economy.

Applicable Companies: Private enterprises whose group companies are operating actual business in more than one country, who have corporate status in Japan, and who establish a new site for Regional Headquarters or R &D in Japan.

Subsidized Costs:
Survey design costs, facility costs, equipment costs and facility lease fee

Subsidy Rates:
Up to one-half for SMEs; up to one-third for non-SMEs; up to two-thirds for those establishing a site in the disaster afflicted zones (Limit: 0.5 billion yen)

JETRO is the Secretariat for this subsidy program coordinated by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). In the past, JETRO has adopted 15 projects of global companies to help their site establishment in Japan. U.S.-owned companies whose projects received the 2011 subsidy in Japan include:

NeoPhotonics Japan, Godo Kaisha: R &D, optical communication equipments

Nihon Cabot Microelectronics K.K.: R &D, materials for electronics component (abrasive)

3M Health Care Ltd.: R &D, healthcare products

The 2012 program was released on Tuesday, August 28, 2012. Applications will be accepted until noon, Monday, November 19, 2012 (Japan time).
