WASHINGTON, Sept. 18, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) announced today the 2012 recipients of its annual awards for exceptional performance by directors in the boardroom. These outstanding corporate directors will be recognized during the NACD Directorship 100 Forum, to be held on November 27th in New York City.

This year's awardees are:

  • B. Kenneth West Lifetime Achievement Award (NACD's highest accolade) to Jack Lowe, Jr., Chairman, Zale Corporation and TDIndustries.

  • Director of the Year to two recipients: Bill Ayer, Chairman, Alaska Air Group and Puget Sound Energy; and Linda Rabbitt, Lead Director, Towers Watson and Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Rand Construction Corporation.

"These directors are being recognized for their exemplary leadership and service to their companies, executive teams and shareholders," said NACD President and CEO Ken Daly. "This group has consistently led by example, set the right tone with their colleagues, and brought valuable insights to their boardrooms. We are honored to recognize each of them for their outstanding leadership and ability to oversee the affairs of the enterprise."

The award recipients will be recognized during a gala dinner at the NACD Directorship 100 Forum held November 27th in New York City. Based on the theme Reinvigorating America, the Forum will also feature a keynote presentation by David Walker, founder and CEO of the Comeback America Initiative and former Comptroller General of the United States; a panel focused on Revitalizing America with Ellen Kullman, chairman and CEO of DuPont and Jenne Britell, chairman United Rentals, director Crown Holdings and Quest Diagnostics; peer-to-peer knowledge exchange sessions; and a networking reception preceding the awards gala dinner.

For 25 years, NACD has recognized distinguished individual directors who serve as role models in promoting exemplary board leadership, oversight and courage in the boardroom. Nominees are evaluated on four key categories: integrity, mature confidence, informed judgment and high performance standards.

An independent selection committee reviews the nominees' history of advancing board performance and leading corporate governance practices in accordance with established NACD principles. The principles are a framework that encourages excellence in areas including risk oversight, corporate strategy, compensation and transparency.
