CARLSBAD, CA--(Marketwire - Sep 19, 2012) - Carlsbad High School received a $5,000 Barona Education Grant today from the Barona Band of Mission Indians. The grant will allow Carlsbad High School to enhance its science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) curriculum with math and science software and two iPads.

Assemblyman Martin Garrick and Principal Matthew Steitz were in attendance to receive the grant on behalf of the school from Chairman Edwin "Thorpe" Romero of the Barona Band of Mission Indians.

"Over the past several years, Carlsbad High School and schools across California have struggled to keep their budgets intact for basic operations," said Chairman Romero. "We are thrilled to be able to help our area schools add to and improve science and technology in their classrooms, areas that are growing quickly in the education world."

Since 2006, the Barona Band of Mission Indians has awarded more than $1.5 million to over 300 schools statewide to help bridge school budget gaps and share resources through its Barona Education Grant Program.

The Barona Education Grant Program is the first of its kind in California created and administered by a Tribal Government. The goal of the program is to create strong educational opportunities for the children of California building upon the success of the Barona Indian Charter School, which operates under a continuous improvement model.
