CEP America Recruits New Vice President for Hospital Medicine

EMERYVILLE, Calif., Sept. 24, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- CEP America and Galen Inpatient Physicians are pleased to announce the recruitment of Mark Talavera, MD. Beginning September 24, 2012, Dr. Talavera will serve as both Vice President for Hospital Medicine at CEP America and Chief Clinical Officer of Galen.

"Mark Talavera has a long history of designing care transitions across the spectrum of patient care," said Mark Spiro, MD, FACEP, president and COO of CEP America. "We are excited to add his perspective and expertise to our leadership team as we continue to develop our service lines to meet the evolving healthcare landscape."

Dr. Talavera will be responsible for the clinical operations of Galen Inpatient Physicians, CEP America's hospital medicine subsidiary. In his position as Vice President, he will play a key role in the integration of physician services across the acute care continuum.

A specialist in pulmonary and critical care medicine, Dr. Talavera received his Medical Degree from the University of California, Davis School of Medicine and completed his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Los Angeles/Harbor UCLA Medical Center. During this time, Dr. Talavera studied health services at the UCLA School of Public Health. Dr. Talavera has an extensive background in hospitalist group management and most recently served as Vice President of Healthcare Services at AppleCare Medical Group based in Southern California. He is a practicing pulmonologist/intensivist and hospitalist and plans to continue to practice at Galen sites.

"I was attracted to CEP America and Galen because of their unique and innovative model for acute care delivery," said Dr. Talavera. "There is a huge opportunity to achieve efficiencies in healthcare through collaboration across departments and specialties; and CEP America and Galen are poised to lead the industry in the development of care coordination strategies."

Together, CEP America and Galen have achieved seamless integration between emergency departments and inpatient services at joint practice locations, resulting in improved patient outcomes, decreased length of stay, and reduced readmissions. By working closely together, CEP America and Galen physicians align with their client hospital's goals, improving throughput and patient care throughout the entire hospital. In 2012 alone, CEP America and Galen developed five new joint practice locations.

Founded in 1975 as an emergency medicine physician partnership, today CEP America provides physician staffing and management services across the acute care continuum, including urgent, emergent, inpatient, and post-discharge settings. Galen Inpatient Physicians was founded by CEP America in 2000 to address the inpatient management needs of hospitals. CEP America is the largest democratic physician partnership in the country, with more than 2000 providers in eight states caring for over 4.2 million patients each year.
