PORTSMOUTH, Va., Sept. 27, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Churchland Animal Clinic announced that the practice's veterinarians and staff will be participating in the "Bark for Life" Virginia Beach fundraiser on September 30. The event, which is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, is a one-mile walk honoring canine companionship for cancer survivors. In addition to the walk, activities include dog games, "top dog" dress up contests, team and community fundraising, music and food. There will also be special demonstrations by therapy and police dogs.
Portsmouth veterinarians at Churchland Animal Clinic will be participating in the American Cancer Society's "Bark for Life" event on September 30. The animal hospital is partnering with North Suffolk Animal Clinic to participate in the event.
The Bark for Life event includes a non-competitive one-mile walk with canines and their owners. Other activities at Bark for Life events include dog games, pet costume contests and demonstrations by therapy and police dogs.
"Dogs are truly man's best friend, especially when an owner is diagnosed with cancer," said the veterinary team. "Canine companions offer unconditional love and support when an owner is diagnosed with cancer. Unlike some humans, they never judge a cancer patient's appearance or abilities. Our staff is walking in honor of the contributions that animals make to their owners' well being."
The veterinary hospital will be supporting a team called "Keep Calm and Cure On." The team is raising money in support of the American Cancer Society and in honor of canine companionship. Together, team members from the two veterinary hospitals have raised nearly $1,000 in support for the American Cancer Society.

As pet owners and veterinary care givers, we witness first-hand each day the difference that canine companionship makes in our lives, especially for those that are struggling with an illness. Bark for Life is held from 1:00pm to 5:00pm on Sunday, September 30 at the Virginia Beach American Cancer Society Office, across from Mount Trashmore Park.
Veterinarian Dr. Heather Normandt, who recently joined the Portsmouth vet hospital, said she is thrilled to see so many members of the community come together in support of this cause.
