DETROIT, Nov. 28, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Children's Defense Fund and Marygrove College will co-host a statewide Pre K-16 Education Leadership Symposium on Thursday, November 29, from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Madame Cadillac Building at Marygrove College, 8425 W. McNichols, Detroit, MI 48221.
At this symposium, you will meet and spend time with Children's Defense Fund (CDF) Founder and President Mrs. Marian Wright Edelman and Marygrove College President Dr. David J. Fike. You will hear about CDF and Marygrove College initiatives focused on youth development, closing achievement gaps and opportunity divides, accelerating learning, preventing summer reading loss, civic and community engagement, public policy and child and family advocacy. A special program highlight will include a speech by keynote speaker Mrs. Marian Wright Edelman, CDF President and Founder entitled: A Call to Action for Restorative Social Justice.
There will be a special book signing with Mrs. Marian Wright Edelman for symposium participants. A limited number of seats are still available. More about Marian Wright Edelman
A graduate of Spelman College and Yale Law School, she began her career in the mid-1960s when, as the first black woman admitted to the Mississippi Bar, she directed the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund office in Jackson, Miss. In 1968, she moved to Washington, D.C., as counsel for the Poor People's Campaign that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. began organizing before his death. She founded the Washington Research Project, a public interest law firm and the parent body of the Children's Defense Fund. She has received over 100 honorary degrees and many awards, including the Albert Schweitzer Humanitarian Prize, the Heinz Award and a MacArthur Foundation Prize Fellowship. In 2000, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award, and the Robert F.
