Dennis Brager to Discuss Innocent Spouse Issues at the ABA's Criminal Tax Fraud and Tax Controversy Conference

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 4, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Brager Tax Law Group founder Dennis Brager, a tax litigation attorney, California State Bar Certified Tax Specialist and former Senior Trial Attorney with the Internal Revenue Service, will be a panelist at the American Bar Association's Criminal Tax Fraud and Tax Controversy Conference. Brager will discuss innocent spouse relief in the session on Administrative Tax Strategies and Techniques in a Recessionary Economy.

Innocent spouse applies to individuals, who sign joint tax returns, but who are unaware of an understatement of tax attributable to erroneous items of the other spouse. Congress has provided, however, that if one spouse is "innocent," then he or she is not liable for the erroneous tax return. "Divorce highlights tax problems in good times and bad," says Brager. "By offloading a tax problem on the other spouse, the IRS innocent spouse defense can be a huge financial relief or a terrible burden."

Brager will discuss three alternatives for innocent spouse relief with a detailed explanation of the factors required for each alternative including the requirements for receiving equitable innocent spouse relief and how to proceed if the IRS refuses to grant innocent spouse relief.

Brager's panel will also cover strategies and selected recent developments regarding IRS-enforced collection efforts, offers in compromise, collection due process proceedings, installment payment agreements, bankruptcy as a collection alternative and FOIA requests.

The Conference is the 29th Annual National Institute on Criminal Tax Fraud, which is the yearly gathering of the criminal tax defense bar, combined with the Second Annual National Institute on Tax Controversy. This program brings together high-level government representatives, judges, corporate counsel and private practitioners engaged in all aspects of tax controversy, tax litigation and criminal tax defense. The three day conference will be held from December 5th to 7th at the Wynn Las Vegas.

Brager has been featured as a Super Lawyer in the field of Tax Litigation by Los Angeles Magazine. He has been quoted as a tax expert by Business Week, the Daily Journal, the National Law Journal, The Daily Beast, USA Today, Palm Beach Daily News, Money Laundering, the Los Angeles Daily Journal and Tax Analyst, and he has testified as an expert witness on federal tax matters.
