Pet360.com Lists 3 Tips for Pet-Proofing Your Holiday Party

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa., Dec. 18, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- It's that time of year when friends and family get together for holiday parties, but nothing can turn a holiday party into a cat-tastrophe faster than an urgent trip to the vet. To ensure your holiday season is pet-emergency free, Pet360.com offers three tips for pet-proofing your holiday party.

  1. The Décor: Most know tinsel is a holiday hazard, but so is garland made out of popcorn, cranberries and other edibles. Scented candles and liquid potpourri can be equally dangerous if a pet accidentally knocks them over and then attempts to lick himself clean. Festive plants such as poinsettias, mistletoe, and kalanchoe are toxic to dogs and cats and should be kept away from pets at all times. For any decorations you do display, make sure they are out of your pet's reach and secured to a sturdy surface.
  2. The Food: Eggnog, fruit cakes and chocolate are all foods commonly served at holiday parties, and they are all toxic to cats and dogs. Make sure to keep all food and drinks away from any surfaces your pets can easily reach, and instruct party-goers to ignore Fido and Fluffy's attempts to get any scraps of food from them.
  3. The Guests: As a pet parent, you know you can't leave your purse or coat on the floor, but guests may not be as familiar with this practice as you are. Pets can get into people's personal items and stumble across any of the pet purse poisons commonly carried in handbags. Additionally, with guests coming and going, it could give any pet ample time to slip through an open door out of excitement or fear. To be safe, keep your pets contained in another room during the party, or make sure your guests are extra vigilant when opening and closing doors.
