IPC the Hospitalist Company Acquires Intensivist Practice

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Dec. 20, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- IPC The Hospitalist Company, Inc. (Nasdaq:IPCM), a leading national hospitalist physician group practice company, announced today that it has acquired Midwest Acute Care Consultants, P.C. (MACC). Headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, MACC provides critical care services to intensive care units at five acute care hospitals in the greater St. Louis area. This acquisition represents an expansion of IPC's facility-based services in the St. Louis market, where the Company already has an established presence.

Adam Singer, MD, Chairman and CEO of IPC, commented, "The closer coordination of care between IPC hospitalists and MACC intensivists holds great potential to make improvements in patient outcomes while reducing the cost of care. Although there are some key differences between critical care and hospitalist medicine, there are also many important similarities. The MACC practices will benefit from many of the same tools and resources that have helped our hospitalist practices thrive."

Nat Levy, M.D., founder and president of MACC, will join IPC as Practice Group Leader. Dr. Levy commented, "IPC and MACC have successfully practiced side by side in a number of acute care hospitals in the St. Louis area for many years. We see a significant opportunity to further improve the quality of patient care by more closely aligning IPC's hospital medicine programs with MACC's critical care practices. The demand for critical care is growing rapidly, and with IPC's financial and administrative support we will have the capability to expand our services to other facilities in the region."

The MACC acquisition is expected to generate approximately 37,000 acute patient encounters per year.
