NEW YORK, Feb. 5, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Global Kids (www.globalkids.org), an award-winning in-school and afterschool New York City youth program, will be joining millions of U.S. students set to participate in activities during Digital Learning Day on Wed., Feb. 6 and the day after.
Digital Learning Day (www.digitallearningday.org) is a campaign to promote digital learning and spotlight successful instructional technology practice in the classroom.
Global Kids is proud to be part of this event that involves all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and over 20,000 teachers. The organization's involvements includes activities before and after the actual day.
Wed., Feb. 6, Playing4Keeps on Digital Learning
High school students will learn game design skills and global issues using the online platform Gamestar Mechanic (http://gamestarmechanic.com/). The workshop will take place at Global Kids at 137 E 25th St. in Manhattan from 4–6 p.m. These students will then become mentor experts and lead more P4K workshops in Hive NYC institutions across the city and enroll youth in the National STEM Video Game Design Challenge.

Thurs., Feb. 7, NYC Haunts
Global Kids and The New York Public Library two years ago piloted NYC Haunts, a mobile, alternate reality game that educates youth about NYC history. Global Kids' NYC Haunts genius Joliz Cedeno will be leading a workshop from 3–5:30 p.m. at the Inwood Branch Library at 4790 Broadway in Manhattan where youth will be using the mobile application ARIS to track the story of Margaret Corbin, the first woman to fight in the Revolutionary War in a battle in Inwood Hill Park and receive a pension. Sadly, her pension was half of what male soldiers earned for fighting, and the youth will be using her story as an entryway to explore inequity in women's wages.
