Breda, the Netherlands, 11 March 2013 - Dietsmann teams have again demonstrated how the Company's commitment to working safely translates into an improving HSE performance. During 2012 there were regrettably two lost time injuries within the entire organization while noteworthy safety awards and records were achieved in Nigeria, Russia, Gabon, Angola and the Republic of the Congo.
The two key safety indicators are Lost-time Injury Frequency (LTIF) and Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR). LTIF is defined as the number of lost-time injuries and fatalities per million hours worked. TRIR is defined as the overall number of recordable incidents (lost time injuries plus fatalities, medical treatment cases and restricted workday cases) per million hours worked.
The continued efforts of Dietsmann's employees to avoid work accidents resulted in an improving performance in 2012 with two Lost Time Injuries (LTIs) and no fatalities reported during the total of nine million man-hours worked. Dietsmann's TRIR for the year was just 0.77, noticeably lower than the 1.37 recorded in 2011.
Safety Awards
In Nigeria in September 2011, the NetcoDietsmann teams were given a Safety Award at the Okpai site (NAOC Contract for Operation & Maintenance of Independent Power Plant), for recording four million work hours without a single accident involving a lost workday. By December 2012 the teams at Okpai had worked five million hours without an incident.
Other important zero LTI milestones reached during 2012 included:
- In Russia: Sakhalin SNGS: 6 million hours;
- In Gabon: Shell Gabon: 3 years;
- In Angola: Sonadiets: 6 years with 6,800,000 worked hours on the Esso Contract (offshore site);
- In the Republic of the Congo; Alima site: 5 years, the SAS site: 10 years.
Health and safety campaigns
During 2012 three HSE campaigns focusing on cardiovascular diseases, the prevention of alcoholism and HIV prevention were run throughout the organization. More local campaigns also continued. For example, in areas where malaria is present employees are advised of appropriate malaria prevention measures and provided with treatment when necessary. Dietsmann also distributed durable mosquito nets to all its teams as well as to the families of its local employees.
Safe hands
The long-term safety campaign to increase awareness of Hand Care continued to bear fruit. The campaign was launched with the theme "2011 - The year of your hands". It reminded all employees about safe manual handling practices and showed ways of improving working methods, avoiding risks and preventing accidents involving hands. In 2012 the frequency of accidents linked to manual handling fell by a further 55%.
World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2012
As in previous years, all Dietsmann businesses and subsidiaries participated actively in the World Day for Safety and Health at Work on 28 April 2012. The activities were also conducted at our subsidiaries at offshore and onshore sites to explain the risks of working at height.
