DevOps Adoption Accelerating, Puppet Labs Survey Results Indicate

High-Performing Organizations Enabled by DevOps Deploy Code 30 Times More Frequently With 50% Fewer Failures

PORTLAND, OR--(Marketwire - Mar 26, 2013) - Puppet Labs, a leading provider of IT automation software for system administrators, today released the results of its annual DevOps Survey, which revealed accelerating adoption of DevOps practices in organizations of all sizes, from small start-ups to Fortune 500 companies.

Organizations that have implemented DevOps practices are up to five times more likely to be high-performing than those that have not and the more mature the DevOps implementation, the better their performance. These breakthrough results indicate a tipping point in the DevOps movement because for the first time ever, DevOps is proven to increase agility and reliability.

"We knew DevOps was making a positive impact in the industry and now we have the metrics to prove it," said James Turnbull, VP of Client Services at Puppet Labs. "Adopting DevOps practices has made companies more agile, more innovative, and better than their competition at managing their infrastructure and applications."

Key findings from the Puppet Labs 2013 State of DevOps Report include:

  • A 26% increase in rate of DevOps adoption by organizations of all sizes, compared to 2011
  • High-performing organizations deploy code 30 times faster with 50 percent fewer failures
  • High-performing organizations shared two common practices: 89% use version control for infrastructure management and 82% have automated their code deployments
  • Demand for DevOps skills continues to grow with job listings for "DevOps" up by 75 percent

"DevOps is instrumental in reducing software deployment cycles from days to minutes," said Rob Cornish, Chief Technology Officer at International Securities Exchange (ISE). "We are able to deploy new features quickly and safely, and rapidly respond to market changes."

"For the first time ever, we have proof that DevOps practices enable achievement of business goals and lead to higher performance, fulfilling the promise of Agile and ITIL/ITSM processes," said Gene Kim, researcher, author of The Phoenix Project: A Novel About IT, DevOps, and Helping Your Business Win, and former CTO of Tripwire, Inc.

The Puppet Labs 2013 State of DevOps Report is based on survey responses from more than 4,000 IT Operations and Development professionals in 90 countries, across companies of all sizes, making it the most comprehensive look at the state of DevOps today.
