National PTA(R) Lauds Senate Leaders for Reaching Bipartisan Deal on Background Checks

Additional Gun Violence Prevention Measures Need Similar Attention, Action

ALEXANDRIA, VA--(Marketwired - Apr 10, 2013) - The following statement may be attributed to National PTA® President Betsy Landers:

National PTA commends Senators Joe Manchin (D-W.Va) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa) for reaching a bipartisan compromise to expand the requirement for federal background checks related to the purchase of firearms. The Manchin-Toomey amendment, slated to be offered as part of the Safe Communities, Safe Schools Act of 2013, proposes to impose background checks for all gun show and Internet sales, but does not address all private transactions. While pleased with the progress, National PTA hopes this proposal is only the first step toward universal background checks.

National PTA supports responsible gun ownership, and today's deal will only further that agenda. If enacted, this amendment will give families across America one less concern and place the appropriate level of responsibility on gun dealers. National PTA urges further bipartisan action Thursday to ensure comprehensive gun safety legislation.

Since 1999, the National PTA has been steadfast in its efforts to prevent gun violence and improve school safety. The Manchin-Toomey deal, however, will only address part of these problems. Our nearly five million members continue to urge lawmakers to protect our nation's children by reinstituting and expanding a ban on assault weapons and non-sporting ammunition in high-capacity magazines. Additionally, National PTA encourages Congress, business and community leaders, educators, and families to address other factors that compromise school safety, such as access to quality mental health services, by expanding school and community-based efforts.
