NuoDB Demonstrates 72,000 "Hyper Pluggable" Databases Running on a Single HP Moonshot System

CAMBRIDGE, MA--(Marketwired - Apr 17, 2013) - NuoDB, Inc., the pioneer in cloud databases, announced today the availability of a demonstration documenting the breakthrough performance of their NuoDB Starlings release on the high density, energy efficient HP Moonshot system. In addition, the company announced the filing of patents for two related features.

The combination of NuoDB Starlings and Moonshot will increase database density, allowing customers to deploy tens of thousands of databases on a single HP Moonshot Server. This deployment will reduce a customer's total cost of hardware, maintenance and power consumption by 90%.

Working with the HP Discovery Lab, as an HP Innovation Partner, NuoDB was able to run 72,000 instances of the NuoDB Cloud database on a fully loaded Moonshot system with 45 cartridges. 

Patent Application Submitted For Innovative Hibernation and Database Bursting Capabilities
A NuoDB database is made up of an agile collection of processes making it very inexpensive to start or stop a database. A NuoDB implementation is also able to monitor server capacity and understand what's going on inside each database. As a result, if a particular database has been idle long enough that something else could use the associated resources more effectively; NuoDB can shut down the inactive databases -- putting it into hibernation mode -- to make way for other operating databases.

When an SQL client needs to access the database that's been shut off, the NuoDB product simply re-starts it. This mechanism has been submitted for a United States Patent for hibernating and waking a database. This on-demand resource management means that while there are some number of databases actively running, NuoDB can support a much larger number of total instances. This innovative new ability is particularly useful for applications that exhibit a long-tail access pattern. Using this new hibernation capability, NuoDB was able to run 7,200 simultaneous active databases and 72,000 total databases on a single 4.3u Moonshot System.

The company has also filed a patent for a new database bursting feature. This capability is used when a single database becomes popular and begins to take up too many resources on a single server. If a customer provisions another server in response, separate from the Moonshot System, then the NuoDB CDMS will temporarily "burst" a high-activity database to that new host until activity dies down. The bursting function occurs automatically, quickly, and provides users with on-demand capacity when a database is suddenly "hot" with a flood of transactions.
