Rovi Entertainment Unbound Technologies Selected for Demonstration at The Cable Show's Imagine Park and The Observatory

Rovi Solution Set Creates Cohesive, Quality Experience With Video Entertainment on Multiple Devices

SANTA CLARA, Calif. and WASHINGTON, June 10, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- (The Cable Show 2013) — Rovi Corporation (Nasdaq:ROVI), driving digital entertainment innovation, will demonstrate at The Cable Show's two marquee pavilions, Imagine Park and The Observatory, its newest technologies for the discovery, delivery and display of digital entertainment — Entertainment Unbound. Representing the fusion of the different products and technologies available from Rovi's portfolio, the Entertainment Unbound concept builds upon today's TV Everywhere deployments and centers around creating a more cohesive and personalized ecosystem for enjoying entertainment. By growing its offerings to incorporate a more streamlined way for subscribers to enjoy entertainment, cable TV operators will be able to drive up the value of their services and align their brand with the delivery of a holistic, cutting-edge entertainment environment.

Entertainment Unbound was selected as a part of this year's Imagine Park, described as The Cable Show's live portal for killer concepts, major breakthroughs and audacious ideas that are about to take digital living to entirely new places. Entertainment Unbound will also be on display at The Observatory, located directly across from Imagine Park, where visitors can immerse themselves in a multimedia experience that shows how bold new user interfaces are transporting cable customers to a new world of discovery.

"The cable industry is making great strides toward enabling consumers to have access to and enjoy video entertainment on the new category of mobile and tablet devices, now a distinct piece of the home entertainment landscape," said Bob Shallow, senior vice president, sales and marketing, Rovi Corporation. "We believe the major drive of the next entertainment experience will be personalization, backed by the ability to deliver recommendations that make sense based on the context and situation. We're using our technologies to build out what this experience would look like."

The live demonstration of Entertainment Unbound at the show includes the ability to serve high quality content over IP at the same quality of cable services today, an early view into how personalization can change the TV watching experience, the incorporation of web video, catch-up TV and VOD in one view as well as streamlined interactivity between the devices in the ecosystem.

In addition, at The Cable Show, Rovi will be showcasing and discussing its continued development and progress on Rovi Services Gateway, TotalGuide™, MainConcept® SDK for HEVC, and DivX Plus Streaming™ technologies. The developments are reflective of Rovi's approach to help service providers expand their offerings with flexible, market-ready, cable-friendly implementations of its solutions:

  • Providing yet another easily deployable option for cable operators to roll out Rovi TotalGuide, Rovi and SeaChange International are demonstrating an integrated guide and gateway solution that could be quickly deployed in RDK-based gateways and set-top boxes and enable deployment of new applications in the home.
  • Helping drive the benefits of High Efficiency Video Codec (HEVC/H.265) throughout the ecosystem, Rovi is working with Broadcom to enable HEVC playback across multiple screens. Broadcom plans to support the playback of DivX® HEVC streaming and downloadable content in the company's recently announced BCM7445, an Ultra High Definition (UltraHD) home gateway chip.
  • Enabling developers who serve the ecosystem to increase the ease with which high-quality video content is delivered through existing cable, internet and wireless channels, MainConcept HEVC SDK 1.0 features patent pending Smart Adaptive Bitrate Encoding Technology (SABET)™. SABET is designed to speed the market's adoption of the new compression standard by lowering the costs and reducing the time required for the mass transcoding of large video content libraries to HEVC.
  • Enabling broadcast networks, cable TV operators, and service providers in the television distribution industry to employ big data sets to define, execute and measure the performance of subscriber offers, program promotions and advertising, Rovi unveiled Rovi Audience Management Solution. Related to Rovi's acquisition of IntegralReach in April, Rovi Audience Management Solution is an advanced predictive analytics solution that is designed to enable companies to inform and optimize local ad placements and promotions.
