PowerStream customers can save at retailer 'Exchange Events'

Eligible customers receive $50 coupon towards purchase of new dehumidifier

VAUGHAN, Ontario, June 10, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- PowerStream is encouraging customers with old, inefficient dehumidifiers to take advantage of a special offer being made available through a series of saveONenergy Exchange Events at local Canadian Tire retail stores.

Customers who bring in units that are at least 10 years old and in working condition will receive a $50 coupon towards the purchase of a new ENERGY STAR® qualified dehumidifier.

Since inefficient appliances are a draw on the power grid as well as customers' pocketbooks, replacing an old dehumidifier saves money, reduces the strain on the system and helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The saveONenergy Exchange Events are scheduled to take place across Ontario from June 14, 2013 through to June 16, 2013 at all Canadian Tire stores.

QUOTES

  • "Older appliances are inherently inefficient, and refrigeration technologies such as that used in dehumidifiers to extract excess humidity have come a long way in reducing energy use. ENERGY STAR qualified models use a minimum of 15 per cent less energy," explained John Sherin, PowerStream's Director, Conservation and Demand Management.

  • "I am proud that PowerStream helps consumers to reduce energy use and costs," said Frank Scarpitti, PowerStream Board Chair and Mayor of the City of Markham. "There's this incentive program for high-efficiency units, there's energy use tips on our website, and we also reduced distribution charges in May. We're always looking for the best ways to help consumers save energy and money."

BACKGROUND

  • A dehumidifier is a relatively common household appliance used to reduce the level of humidity in the air. They are typically used for health reasons and to improve comfort. Humid air can cause mold and mildew to grow inside homes, both of which pose numerous health risks, and very warm humid air can make some people extremely uncomfortable. Reducing the humidity within the home reduces these effects. Areas of high humidity can also increase the possibility of unwanted pests such as clothes moths, cockroaches, fleas and dust mites who prefer these conditions. Relative humidity in residences is preferably 30 to 50 per cent.

  • Natural Resources Canada lists ENERGY STAR® qualified appliances on their website and provides an excellent resource for customers seeking more information on the proper sizing and capacity of the various models available. http://oee.nrcan.gc.ca/energy-efficient-products/major-appliances/1512
