NAFC to Hold Massive One-Day Free Medical Clinic in New Orleans with Help of Sponsor Covance

Volunteers and Patients Encouraged to Register

NEW ORLEANS, July 1, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Covance Inc. (NYSE:CVD), a global leader of drug development services, has partnered with the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics (NAFC) to bring a large one-day free medical clinic to New Orleans on July 3, where the uninsured and underinsured patients will be able to receive free medical care as well as be connected to local resources.

"Medical care is a critical need in our country today and so many people do not have health insurance," said Lisa Uthgenannt, Corporate Vice President, Human Resources, and one of the Covance executives who regularly volunteers at the events. "Our mission at Covance is to help our clients to bring medicines to patients who need them most. Our sponsorship of the CARE clinics is a reflection of our mission -- using our medical and clinical skills and expertise to benefit those who need critical care. Our employees are proud to see Covance making a difference in these communities where we live and work."

According to the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured, 23 percent of non-elderly individuals are uninsured in the state of Louisiana.

Patients are encouraged to call 1-800-340-1301 to schedule an appointment for the clinic. Each patient who attends the clinic will see a medical practitioner for an initial examination. Based on that examination, the patient may receive additional point-of-care testing, including electrocardiogram (EKG), cholesterol blood test, glucose test for diabetes, muscular-skeletal exam, urinalysis, hemoglobin test, pregnancy test and strep test. Patients also may receive additional services including kidney disease testing, mental health counseling and more. All patients will also receive information on local safety-net providers, such as Free and Charitable Clinics, and other resources in the area that are available to them.

"One of the most common misconceptions about the Affordable Care Act is that every person in America will have access to health insurance, in fact many are amazed to learn that up to 29 million Americans will still be left with out coverage," said Nicole Lamoureux, Executive Director of the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics. "The NAFC is extremely grateful to Covance for their sponsorship of this C.A.R.E. Clinic and for the company volunteers who are dedicated to helping us build a healthy America, one patient at a time."

Volunteers can still register to help at this clinic event. More information can be found at www.nafcclinics.org. These events are made possible though generous sponsors such as Covance, as well as through individual donations.
