The New York Council on Problem Gambling Launches KnowTheOdds Infographic

KnowTheOdds Unveils Interactive Infographic Calculating the Financial Costs of Gambling

ALBANY, NY--(Marketwired - Aug 13, 2013) - The New York Council on Problem Gambling, a not-for-profit independent corporation dedicated to increasing public awareness about problem and compulsive gambling, announced today the launch of a new infographic that showcases the financial repercussions of gambling and correlates with their current campaign, KnowTheOdds.

The interactive infographic educates users on how much they personally spend on gambling activities on average per year. The graphics move through the vibrant village of Anytown and prompts users to include the amount they spend on online gaming, lottery tickets, and office bets, among other gambling behaviors. Along the way, users will learn statistics on problem gambling and the financial effects of their gambling habits.

"This infographic is a great tool to encourage people, who may not think they have a gambling problem, to stop and evaluate their gambling activities," said James Maney, executive director of the New York Council on Problem Gambling. "Even if the final tally doesn't seem that high, it's important to be aware of your gambling behavior. And if the infographic reveals you are spending too much on gambling, KnowTheOdds is available to help connect you with the resources that can assist with overcoming any signs of problem gambling."

The infographic is a part of KnowTheOdds, a larger campaign focused on connecting problem gamblers with resources to help overcome their addiction. Other resources available for problem and compulsive gambling include:

  • KnowTheOdds.org - a website that incorporates statistics, links to resources, and videos that can be shared via social networks.
  • Blog on KnowTheOdds.org that breaks down timely topics and highlights new offerings.
  • Twitter (@KnowTheOdds) and Facebook profiles.
  • Online videos and e-books - sharable items that look to create new conversations among all ages.
  • Ongoing radio and television public service announcements.
