Range of Toshiba DTVs Now Providing Consumers in Europe Access to High Quality Entertainment Services Powered by Rovi's Advanced Adaptive Streaming Format

BERLIN, Sept. 6, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- IFA 2013, Rovi Corporation (Nasdaq:ROVI), driving digital entertainment innovation, today announced the availability of a range of Toshiba DTVs that use Rovi's cutting-edge DivX Plus Streaming technology. In the UK, Toshiba DTVs are enabling consumers to enjoy a high-quality entertainment experience when using Dixon's Retail's KNOWHOW Movies, one of the many services around the globe now supporting Rovi's advanced adaptive streaming format.

"Today, consumers in the UK are able to experience our advanced adaptive streaming solution first hand, which is a true testament to our success in rapidly taking DivX Plus Streaming from market adoption to consumer availability," said Bob Shallow, SVP, Product Sales & Marketing at Rovi. "Thanks to our collaboration with leading IC and CE manufacturers, we are realizing our vision for delivering a better consumer streaming experience."

DivX Plus Streaming brings a cutting-edge feature set to streaming media that is typically characteristic of the Blu-ray Disc consumer experience including enabling multi-language subtitles and audio tracks, trick-play track for smooth fast forward and rewind, chapter points for quick scene navigation, and resume playback across devices. In addition, to help eliminate buffering or the "spinning wheel", DivX Plus Streaming includes Dynamic Resolution Scaling. Providing smooth and seamless transitions between different resolutions, Dynamic Resolution Scaling helps consumers enjoy quick start times and continuous play even in low or fluctuating bandwidth environments.

"We are pleased to expand our relationship with Rovi and collaborate with them to deliver a high quality entertainment experience to consumers," said Glenn Zanoni, Senior Product Manager, Toshiba Information Systems (UK) Ltd. "Hollywood tested and UltraViolet approved, DivX Plus Streaming delivers an advanced entertainment experience that supports the range of purchase and use cases that consumers demand today."

DivX Plus Streaming has been approved by studios and adopted by entertainment service providers helping to drive advanced digital entertainment distribution. The adaptive streaming format has gained the support of IC vendors, consumer electronics device manufacturers and studios. In addition to powering video delivery for KNOWHOW Movies, DivX Plus Streaming was selected to power services in China for STM, as well as Mei-Ah, a film production company that recently launched an on-demand entertainment offering for mobile users in collaboration with China Mobile.

DivX Plus Streaming is a component of DivX Video Service, which offers a solution for powering the video distribution chain from creation of video and enablement of secure delivery, to multi-screen playback across PC, Mobile and CE devices. These components help video services quickly scale offerings and provide consumers a high level of consistency, flexibility, and interoperability. In addition to Rovi's DivX Plus Streaming, DivX Video Service includes DRM (digital rights management), as well as MainConcept® professional encoding tools.

Visitors to IFA in Berlin, September 6-11, can view live demonstrations of DivX Video Service with DivX Plus Streaming along with Rovi's complete range of solutions driving the advanced discovery, delivery, and monetization of digital entertainment at Rovi's Hall 25, Stand 151. Also on display at the show is Rovi's DivX® 10 Consumer software, the first to market application supporting DivX HEVC video, as well as additional components of Rovi's end-to-end solution for High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC/H.265).
