AIA|DC Hosts "Meet the 2014 DC Mayoral Candidates" to Discuss the City's Future

Forum Will Focus on the Future of DC and Decisions Affecting Its Built Environment

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwired - Feb 7, 2014) - What does the future Washington look like? Will it have taller buildings, more green space, more families, or new features from other world class cities? As DC's 2014 mayoral race heats up, candidates will discuss their vision for the District by addressing key issues that will shape our city and quality of life.

Moderated by Douglas Fruehling, Editor of the Washington Business Journal, the mayoral candidates will address topics important to design professionals and the public, including how they will approach:

  • balancing new development with established neighborhoods;
  • promoting neighborhood diversity;
  • elevating the quality of design of buildings and the urban fabric;
  • creating a DC more conducive to raising and retaining families; and
  • their respective positions on building height, sustainability, and more.

The Q&A panel is being hosted at the District Architecture Center by the American Institute of Architects Washington Chapter (AIA|DC), the Potomac Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (POASLA), and National Capital Area Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA National Capital). As of February 7, 2014, all legally registered candidates have been invited.

"The most successful cities of the 21st century are being defined by their vibrancy and livability. And that's a direct result of decisions affecting their urban design, planning, and architecture," said Mary Fitch, Executive Director of AIA|DC. "We're pleased to host a discussion focused on how these key issues will impact and change the physical fabric of DC and our interactions with it, including how we live, work, and play in this great city."
