Entropic Ships More Than 5 Million Chipsets for HD-DTAs in North America

Worldwide Cable Operators and OEMs Considering HD-DTA Solutions Benefit From Entropic's Full System Solution and Proven Experience Supporting HD-DTA Deployments

LOS ANGELES, April 30, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- (The Cable Show – Booth #2001) -- Entropic (Nasdaq:ENTR), a world leader in semiconductor solutions for the connected home, today announced it has shipped more than five million set-top box (STB) system-on-a-chip (SoC) solutions for North American cable operator HD-DTAs (High-Definition Digital Transport Adapters).

HD-DTAs, powered by Entropic's STB SoCs, allow cable operators to reclaim analog bandwidth, which is critical for operators who want to launch enhanced, value-added digital services. By deploying HD-DTAs, cable subscribers can continue to watch programming over an all-digital cable network without the need for a full-fledged digital STB. HD-DTAs are usually self-installed and may be enabled or disabled remotely, which reduces operator truck rolls. Entropic's HD-DTA solutions are designed to be universal and can operate seamlessly with major head-end systems where digital content is encrypted or in the clear.

Entropic HD-DTA solutions are currently deployed with Tier-1 North American cable operators with additional operators expected to add HD-DTAs later this year. Entropic began shipping Standard Definition-DTA (SD-DTA) solutions to cable operators in 2011, and has built upon its experience to successfully deploy HD-DTA chips in volume.

"Entropic has reached a major milestone having shipped more than five million chipsets for HD-DTAs in North America," said Matt Rhodes, senior vice president, Global Marketing, Entropic. "By deploying HD-DTAs, cable operators are able to cost-effectively remove analog video from their systems and allocate additional bandwidth to advanced services, such as premium HD content, Video-on-Demand and DOCSIS 3.0."

Entropic's HD-DTA SoCs leverage the processing power and performance of ARM® Cortex™-A9 CPUs. The solutions integrate advanced broadcast decoding, graphics rendering, and content protection technologies, which are required for digital networks. With a comprehensive feature set including customizable application software, Entropic's solutions provide a system that significantly reduces time-to-market, an optimized manufacturer bill-of-materials (BoM) cost, advanced power management and enhanced picture quality capabilities for an improved home entertainment experience.
