Nexans opens a new facility in Donchery

The new facilities will support Nexans Power Accessories France's aims in terms of portfolio enhancement, internationalization and innovation

Paris, June 24, 2014 - Nexans, France's leading provider of connection accessories for Low and Medium Voltage (LV/MV) underground power distribution networks, today opened its new 25,000m² plant in Donchery, Ardennes.

The opening represents a major step for Nexans' 100 year old Ardennes-based subsidiary and its 200 employees.

The plant, which is dedicated to the design, manufacturing, marketing and distribution of connection accessories, has nearly doubled in size. Nexans' Jointer Training School is also on site. The Donchery plant has been designated as a Smart Grid Competence Center within Nexans Group. Thanks to this added capacity, Nexans Power Accessories France will be able to significantly boost its commercial activities, reinforcing Nexans Group's position within France and stimulating its international expansion. This strategy is focused on two main innovations areas:

  • The compact cold-shrink joint adapts Nexans Power Accessories France's core business to global market needs.
  • The Smart Grid range puts Nexans at the heart of energy transition dynamics through the development of PLC (Power Line Communication) metering and communication solutions for power distribution networks, as well as innovative connection and charging systems for electric vehicles.

Nexans' new research laboratory for smart grids

Nexans is a responsible industrial company that regards sustainable development as integral to its global and operational strategy. Its commitment to smart grids is in-keeping with this stance.

Innovation to support the energy transition

Nexans is involved in many collaborative projects supported by ADEME (France's Environment and Energy Management Agency) under the "Investments for the Future" program, including:

  • SoGrid, a consortium established to develop a 3G (third generation) PLC chain of sensors and communication devices for end-to-end power distribution networks. From smart meters installed at customers' premises, to connection equipment distributed across the medium voltage network to the source substation, a comprehensive chain of devices will be deployed on ERDF's (European Regional Development Fund) Midi-Pyrénées network in Toulouse in order to demonstrate the performance of 3G PLC during real-time control of the grid.

  • Eco2Charge, a project aimed at accelerating the deployment of electric vehicles by turning tertiary sites equipped with charging infrastructure into fully fledged energy ecosystems where power generation, consumption and storage come together in the same place. The project will be presented in detail by all partners at a press conference held on September 18, 2014 at Nexans' headquarters in Paris, France.

Alain Robic, President of Nexans Power Accessories France, said: "We are very proud to open this new plant which enables us to further grow our activities. This plant confirms our aim of strengthening our traditional offering in France and abroad while, at the same time, developing Nexans' smart grid expertise."

Nexans installs the first showroom dedicated to the power grid as a whole at its Donchery plant

The Nexans showroom demonstrates the company's know-how and history in the field of power grids. It promotes all the Group's technologies, illustrates the variety of Nexans products and offerings, and showcases its wide expertise. It will welcome visitors from around the world for presentations, training sessions and other events.
