Assistance Critical to Enabling Red Cross to Respond to Disasters in the United States

WASHINGTON, DC, June 30, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- via PRWEB - The American Red Cross today recognized National Grid USA, headquartered in Waltham, MA, for its support of Red Cross disaster response work through the Annual Disaster Giving Program.

Members of the Red Cross Annual Disaster Giving Program pledge donations on an ongoing basis, in advance of major disasters, to help the Red Cross ensure an immediate response to meet the needs of those affected by disasters of all sizes, at no cost and regardless of income.

"Thanks to the support of National Grid USA and other companies and foundations, the Red Cross can immediately respond to the needs of people impacted by disaster in the United States," said American Red Cross President and CEO Gail McGovern. "Members of this program generously help create a reliable funding base for disaster relief services, providing food, shelter, emotional support and other essential assistance to disaster victims."

"National Grid is proud to continue its support of the vital services provided by the Red Cross in time of crises," said Tom King, National Grid U.S. president. "As a gas and electric company, we are often among the first responders on scene helping to restore normalcy when disaster – such as those brought on by severe weather – strikes the communities in which we serve. During those unfortunate events, our employees have worked side by side with Red Cross volunteers. We've been fortunate to witness the invaluable work the Red Cross does during those times and we know and appreciate all they do to bring relief when people need it most."

"The generous donations from Annual Disaster Giving Program members help the Red Cross assist disaster survivors and support volunteers who work tirelessly at the disaster scene," said Neal Litvack, Red Cross chief development officer. "All money donated by the program members and by the general public is essential to our ability to fulfill the mission of the Red Cross."
