Photo Release -- Window World of Boston Transports Wounded Veteran to Family Celebration

BOSTON, Sept. 07, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- BOSTON, Nov. 4, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Window World of Boston sponsored two Veterans Airlift Command (VAC) missions Friday, October 31, 2014 and Sunday, November 2, 2014, transporting 3rd Special Forces Group SSG Nicholas Lavery from his hometown of Fayetteville, NC to Boston for Lavery's grandfather's 80th birthday celebration. These flights marked the 71st and 72nd VAC missions sponsored by Window World®.

The VAC provides free air transportation to post 9/11 combat wounded and their families through a national network of volunteer aircraft owners and pilots. For many wounded warriors with prosthetics or other mobility issues, flying in private aircraft rather than commercial planes is the best way to accommodate their unique needs.

Lavery was awarded the Silver Star for pushing another soldier out of the way during an insider attack at an Afghan outpost; the same battle that caused him to lose his leg in March of 2013.

The plane was piloted by Johnny Johnston, Window World's chief pilot and an army veteran. Window World of Boston General Manager, Eric Peabody, and his team were in attendance to meet Lavery and Vermiglio prior to their departure. "American heroes, like Lavery, have given so much to our country," said Peabody. "I am honored to be able to give back in this small way."
