Doorman Fixes Online Shopping's Weakest Link, the 'Last Mile'

Ensures Online Shoppers Actually Receive Package Deliveries, When They Want Them, and Right to Their Door

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 17, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Last holiday-season, more than two million deliveries were delayed, missing the Christmas deadline, or went missing entirely due to front porch theft. A new service from Doorman has solved the problem for San Francisco residents, delivering packages on demand using Doorman's mobile app. Doorman plans to expand to several additional major US markets next year.

On average, one in five deliveries actually fails on the first attempt in urban areas but it can be as high as 50 percent in certain zip codes. The problem is expected to worsen significantly this holiday season following a double-digit increase in online shopping year over year.

Doorman will hold packages for up to six weeks at its depot, in case recipients are traveling, and deliver them on-demand, to their door, between 6 pm to midnight, for just $3.99 per package. Online shoppers simply provide their Doorman address to the site from which they're purchasing. Once the package arrives at Doorman, an alert prompts users to set-up the desired time for delivery by appointment, seven days a week, including evenings.

"We all know how annoying it is to work all day and then come home to find one of those missed delivery stickers. Or maybe your package has been stolen, rained on, or requires a Saturday pick-up miles from your home," said Founder and CEO Zander Adell. "It's even worse for apartment dwellers without doormen in urban areas. It's almost impossible to make sure you're at home for a delivery so you almost always have to go pick it up in person."

Mr. Adell was previously a Technical Director at Pixar, working on design and coding for films including Toy Story 3 and Wall-E, then a video gaming product manager at Idle Games.

Since launching earlier this year, Doorman has already delivered more than 5,000 packages from 1,200 unique retailers.
