SNIA Launches New SNIA Emerald(TM) Recognized Tester Program (RTP)

RTP Strengthens and Expands Industry Ecosystem for Testing Data Center Storage Energy Efficiency

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO--(Marketwired - Dec 10, 2014) -  The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) released the Version 2.0.3 SNIA Emerald™ Power Efficiency Test and Measurement Specification in 2013, as referenced by the EPA ENERGY STAR Program Specification for Data Center Storage. To further the adoption of SNIA Emerald™, SNIA is now announcing the SNIA Emerald™ Recognized Tester Program (RTP), and designating the first test lab to qualify. RTP recognizes organizations that offer testing services by their demonstration of competency in performing repeatable SNIA Emerald™ specification test methods, procedures, and results.

The RTP program activity consists of a SNIA audit team who perform an assessment of an applicant's test facility, test equipment, test personnel, testing methods, and test results. Upon successful review of the assessment process and results, the applicant is awarded recognition as a SNIA Emerald Recognized Tester and listed on the SNIA Emerald Recognized Tester Program website. The program serves the global ecosystem of storage industry test labs, safety and environmental testing labs involved in ENERGY STAR testing, and storage product manufacturers/testing labs seeking industry lab testing services.

"The new SNIA Emerald Recognized Testing Program will benefit storage product manufacturers with available services to augment their in-house regulatory testing and compliance staff as they increase their energy efficiency product testing and planned test submissions to the SNIA Emerald Program and the EPA ENEGY STAR Data Storage Program, "said Wayne M. Adams, Board of Directors Chairman Emeritus and Green Storage Initiative Chairman. "We are also pleased to recognize Demartek as the first Recognized Tester. RTP augments and expands on SNIA's ever growing portfolio of storage technology testing programs"

"The SNIA Emerald Recognized Tester Program provides an excellent and in-depth validation of a testing organization's ability to run SNIA Emerald tests", stated Robert Meyers, Data Center Product Manager, EPA ENERGY STAR Program. "While it is not required by ENERGY STAR, testing organizations looking to test and measure enterprise data storage systems may benefit from the additional oversight and technical direction that this program offers."

"Demartek is honored and excited to be the first test lab to become a SNIA Emerald™ Recognized Tester," said Dennis Martin, Demartek President. "Becoming a SNIA Emerald Recognized Tester strengthened our test procedures and deepened our knowledge of the SNIA Emerald™ test specification. With this recognition, we are better able to assure storage product vendors of our knowledge, experience and equipment to properly run the SNIA Emerald™ power efficiency tests and, by extension, the EPA ENERGY STAR Data Center Storage tests, which are based on the SNIA Emerald™ test specification."

SNIA is now taking applications from interested parties and further information can be obtained from the SNIA Emerald™ website http://www.snia.org/emerald/rtp-overview

The Recognized Tester program expands on SNIA's portfolio of storage technology testing programs which include SMI-S Conformance Test Program, KMIP Test Program, Solid State Storage Performance Test Suite, CDMI Plugfest, and SMB Plugfest.

About the SNIA Green Storage Initiative
The Storage Networking Industry Association's (SNIA) Green Storage Initiative (GSI) is focused on advancing energy efficiency and conservation for networked storage technologies toward the goal of minimizing the environmental impact of data storage operations. The SNIA's Green Storage activities take place in two separate working bodies, the SNIA Green Storage Technical Working Group (TWG) and the Green Storage Initiative. The GSI is responsible for managing the SNIA Emerald™ Program, providing input and guidance to the Green Storage TWG, and directing the marketing of energy efficiency activities within the SNIA and the storage networking industry. www.snia.org/green

About the SNIA Emerald™ Program and the SNIA Emerald™ Power Efficiency Specification
The SNIA Emerald™ Program is a vendor-neutral, public service to the storage industry and end users that is sponsored and operated by the SNIA GSI. The program provides a standardized way of reporting vendor-performed test results that characterize the various aspects of storage system energy usage and efficiency. Those test results -- which are based on performance under different workload metrics -- are combined with other power-related information about storage systems and their components. All of this data is then maintained in a common repository, accessible to the public, and presented in a consistent format that can be used to help determine facility power usage and efficiency for data storage solutions, as well as the costs to operate such systems. The measurement procedure and test metrics are documented in the SNIA Emerald™ Power Efficiency Specification, which was developed, released and is maintained by the Green Storage TWG under the guidance of the GSI. www.sniaemerald.com
