Silver Star Announces "Gigabiz" Community in Teton Valley, Idaho

DRIGGS, Idaho, Dec. 23, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Silver Star Communications has announced that they are now offering their fiber customers in Teton Valley speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second. "We like to call this our "Gigabiz" initiative because this gigabit service connection is oriented towards business usage," said Silver Star President & COO Ron McCue. "There is a lot of potential in Teton Valley for remote workers as well as tech-oriented businesses and we are proud to have the network to support these enterprises with the golden standard of broadband speed and reliability - and we are uniquely positioned to do so."

What can you do with 1Gig? The question is more what can't you do. This kind of broadband capacity essentially future-proofs a business – supporting leading-edge applications with room to grow. Cloud-based services, virtual private networks, smart control applications, hosted phone systems and video conferencing, and full-throttle Internet for HD video streaming, and large-file transfers – these are just the tip of the iceberg.

"The City of Driggs is thrilled to be a community distinguished by this level of broadband service," said Hyrum Johnson, Mayor of Driggs, "We know that this holds economic promise for the city as well as the entire Teton Valley community and look forward to showing businesses and individuals attracted to our fiber infrastructure everything else we have to offer in terms of quality of life."

"It is really exciting to see the technological advances occurring in this valley and the connectivity of Eastern Idaho is great for our economic outlook," said Chair of the Teton County Board of County Commissioners, Kelly Park.

Silver Star's fiber network is located in Eastern Idaho and, and Western Wyoming. Since 2005 Silver Star has invested over $20 million in Teton Valley's fiber optic infrastructure. This summer Silver Star worked with the City of Victor to provide fiber to their downtown core. With the kind of partnerships that Silver Star has led across Idaho and Wyoming for the last two decades, laying fiber over Teton Pass to connect the Wyoming network to Idaho's, helping to create Syringa Networks, and connecting southeast Idaho into the Wasatch front of Utah, they have created a modern, robust and "survivable" fiber optic network. "Survivable" refers to the fact that if the fiber ring is damaged at any point traffic is automatically re-routed in the other direction along the ring so service is not disrupted. Silver Star is a founding member of Syringa Networks in Idaho, which essentially makes up the Gem State's own survivability ring as well as provides connections to the fiber optic superhighway with routes to Salt Lake City and Seattle.

The Silver Star owned Teton Broadband Project also allowed for the first 100 gigabit per second optical connection trial in the Rocky Mountain West between Silver Star Communications in Thayne, Wyoming and Advanced Communications Technology (ACT) in Sheridan, Wyoming. Silver Star conducted this trial in April of 2013 in conjunction with ACT and Cisco, demonstrating that this level of optical connection is possible over 420 miles of fiber, traversing multiple networks. "The success of the trial showed that we've been making the right kind of investments, building a network that can meet the future bandwidth demands of Teton Valley, Jackson Hole, Ammon and Idaho Falls," said McCue.
