Two New York City Plastic Surgeons Reveal Their 'Modified' Tummy Tuck Approach

Dr. Daniel Y. Maman and Dr. Stafford R. Broumand of 740 Aesthetics Describe Ideal Candidates for Abdominoplasty and Touch on Their Unique Approach to the Procedure

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - Apr 29, 2015) - Though many people think of tummy tuck surgery as a procedure intended to get rid of fat in the stomach region, this is a common misconception, states Manhattan plastic surgeon Daniel Y. Maman, MD. In reality, he explains, tummy tuck surgery should be conceptualized as more of a skin operation, as it is intended to help patients achieve a fitter, firmer appearance in the abdominal region via the tightening of muscles and removal of excess skin.

"With this in mind," Dr. Maman writes in a recent blog post, "ideal candidates are individuals who are not necessarily overweight, but rather those who are thin, fit, or very near their desired weight whose biggest issue is loose and/or excess skin that proves unresponsive to both diet and exercise." He goes on to note that candidates for tummy tuck surgery -- which is medically referred to as abdominoplasty -- may also include people whose abdominal wall is stretched out after having children and/or losing a significant amount of weight.

At 740 Aesthetics, Dr. Maman and his colleague, Dr. Stafford R. Broumand, offer tummy tuck candidates a unique approach to abdominoplasty that can be tailored to meet each person's individual needs. According to Dr. Broumand, people considering abdominoplasty have traditionally had two options: a full tummy tuck and a mini tummy. As a more extensive procedure, the full abdominoplasty generally targets the region extending from the pubic area up to the ribcage, he explains. In addition to excising skin and tightening abdominal muscles, this approach often involves the use of liposuction to remove excess fat and achieve a better contour. In contrast, he continues, the mini abdominoplasty typically only encompasses the lower portion of the abdomen and is more commonly employed for individuals who have less excess skin and/or fat present.

While both abdominoplasty methods can be highly effective for the right patient, Dr. Broumand says he and Dr. Maman have found that most people fall somewhere in between needing a mini or full tummy tuck. For this reason, they have developed what they refer to as a "modified abdominoplasty," which incorporates various aspects of both techniques. "Using a relatively shorter incision, the modified tummy tuck involves the tightening of abdominal muscles from the ribcage down to the pubic region as well as the removal of extra skin in the lower abdomen," explains Dr. Broumand in another recent blog post. He goes on to add that liposuction can also be utilized to remove fat and obtain an improved contour -- particularly around the hips -- and an innovative post-surgical analgesic called EXPAREL® can be employed to reduce potential discomfort and help expedite the tummy tuck recovery process.

In the end, the two New York City plastic surgeons state that tummy tuck surgery can be an excellent cosmetic option for the right candidates, though not every technique is one-size-fits-all. "When considering abdominoplasty," notes Dr. Maman, "do your research, find out if your prospective surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and make sure he or she can customize the procedure based on your specific needs and goals."
