CHLI Annual Gala & 2015 Leadership Awards Honorees

WASHINGTON, April 29, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute will host its 11th Annual Gala & Leadership Awards on May 13, 2015 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Washington, D.C. This year CHLI is celebrating its commitment to Latino youth and is launching its CHLI Global Leaders Alumni Association. CHLI will be honoring exceptional leaders and institutions that have been involved with CHLI in the past and have influenced our country's future leaders.

The 2015 CHLI Leadership in International Relations Award will be presented to Senator Alvaro Uribe Velez, former President of Colombia. This award is presented to an international leader who supports the advancement of the Hispanic community in the United States. President Uribe's collaboration with CHLI and his commitment to Latino youth has been noteworthy. He was the keynote speaker at CHLI's First Annual Trade & International Affairs Symposium in 2012.

"CHLI is honored to present its 2015 Leadership in International Relations Award to President Alvaro Uribe Velez. President Uribe is greatly respected by CHLI and we look forward to continued cooperation with him in the future," said Congressman Albio Sires.

CHLI will also honor Jeb Bush, the former Governor of Florida, with the 2015 CHLI Leadership in Public Service Award. This award is presented to a public servant who has supported the advancement of the Hispanic community in the United States. Governor Bush has collaborated with CHLI in the past, having spoken at CHLI's 10th Anniversary Reception, and is greatly respected by CHLI's Board and founding members.

"It is our privilege to present CHLI's 2015 Leadership in Public Service award to Governor Jeb Bush. Governor Bush reflects CHLI's values in many ways and has long worked for the advancement of educational opportunity for all," said CHLI Chairman, former Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart.

A special recognition will be presented to Florida International University (FIU), Miami's public research university, on its 50th anniversary, for its continued support of CHLI's programs. As an exceptional CHLI partner, FIU is committed to Hispanic youth and provides its students with a myriad of educational opportunities, while its research enterprise advances solutions locally and globally. The University has joined with CHLI in the past and greatly assisted the CHLI Future Leaders Conference, the Global Leaders Program Internships, and recently partnered with CHLI for its Communications Fellowship.

"I'm very pleased with CHLI's decision to honor Florida International University (FIU). This growing institution was part of my personal path to success and I am thrilled that CHLI and FIU are working together to promote and prepare students, so they can become the leaders of the future," said Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.
