Planning to build a fence, plant a tree or undertake any kind of digging project this long weekend? ATCO Gas reminds Albertans of the importance of digging safely around natural gas lines. These lines may be shallower than you think, and take very little effort to puncture.

We encourage you to follow these three steps for safe digging:

1. Click Before You Dig: Request the location of underground utilities in your yard by visiting clickbeforeyoudig.com. This should be done at least two full working days in advance of digging, and sooner during the busy spring season. This is a free service.

2. Plan Your Work Area: Avoid digging within one metre of either side of the locate markings if possible.

3. Dig Carefully: If you must dig near natural gas lines, dig gradually and carefully with a shovel. Once the gas line is exposed, use your hands to clear away any excess dirt.
