Nebraska Methodist College Earns Community Service Award

The 2014 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll has recognized Nebraska Methodist College for its continued outreach efforts in the Omaha Metro area. The institution attained a spot on the list thanks to the hard work of the school's Center for Health Partnerships (CfHP).

OMAHA, Neb., June 9, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Nebraska Methodist College has earned a place on the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, continuing the school's string of recent awards for its dedication to teaching the meaning of care to both students and the community at large.

Inclusion on this prestigious list is due in large part to the work of NMC's Center for Health Partnerships, an organization whose sole function is to extend the college's holistic approach to healthcare out into the community. Tami Buffalohead-McGill, the director of the CfHP, had this to say about her group's work:

"Nebraska Methodist College is, first and foremost, an institution responsible for teaching the nursing and allied health professionals of tomorrow," said Mrs. Buffalohead-McGill. "But it's through faculty collaboration with the CfHP that students are able to obtain a real sense of how their actions can have a positive impact in the community.

"People sometimes have the mistaken assumption that all we care about is the technical skills employed in the hospital room.  The simple truth is that we can sometimes make an even bigger difference by providing education and essential health services in underserved areas that need those services the most.  This is what the CfHP enables us to do."

For Dennis Joslin, president and CEO of Nebraska Methodist College, the award echoes the college's approach to serving up educational experiences that they won't necessarily find at other schools.

"We're incredibly proud of our placement on the 2014 Higher Education Community Honor Roll," said Dr. Joslin.  "This award continues a streak of accomplishments that could only be made possible due to the hard work of our faculty, staff, and student population.  This year alone, we received the Community Engagement Classification from the Carnegie Foundation in addition to the GI Jobs Military Friendly Status recognition for the fourth year running.

"We will continue to lead by example in the hope that our students consistently exemplify the traits that are needed to become productive citizens who are genuinely interested in improving society in whatever way they can, both in and out of the hospital setting."
