Dr. Lee's Spine Center Announces Passive and Active Therapy Treatment for Car Accident Injuries

QUEENS, N.Y., June 14, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Lee's Spine Center announced new treatment guidelines recommending a combination of passive and active therapy treatments for car accident injuries. The Queens chiropractor says that integrating these two treatment approaches delivers the greatest benefit for patients. Active therapies are treatments like physiotherapy, during which patients actively move their bodies as part of the treatment; passive therapies are treatments like cryotherapy, during which the body is not moved. Dr. Lee recommends a combination of these therapies for enhanced pain management and to support the body's natural injury rehabilitation process following a car accident injury such as whiplash.

Queens chiropractor Dr. Lee is educating auto accident injury patients about the benefits of passive therapy and active therapy in addition to chiropractic care for pain management and injury rehabilitation.

Active therapies are hands-on therapies during which patients must physically move their joints and muscles as part of the treatment process. Corrective care exercises and physiotherapy strengthening exercises are two examples of active therapies.

Passive therapies are treatment techniques during which patients do not need to physically move any muscles in order to participate in the treatment process. Examples of passive therapies include moist heat, cryotherapy, ultrasound and TENS treatment. According to Dr. Lee, passive therapies are most appropriate for patients who are in the early stages of recovery and are too weak to physical participate in active strengthening.

Moist heat is a treatment technique that can help relax tight muscles. Cryotherapy uses cold packs to treat inflammation of the muscles. Ultrasound is a passive treatment technique that transmits sound waves deep into the muscle tissue; the sound waves interfere with pain signals coming from the injured part of the body and also stimulate healing, according to Dr. Lee.

"In general, a combination of active and passive therapies produces the best results for patients," said Dr. Lee. "Both therapies work towards achieving the same goal of drug-free pain relief and injury rehabilitation. Different therapies may be better suited to a patient's treatment needs depending on which stage a patient is at during the recovery process. Our goal is to support whole body health from within by empowering a patient's body to 'heal itself' through the right combination of treatment techniques."

Passive and active therapies both work towards improving mobility, says Dr. Lee. The treatments strengthen the tissues and muscles to stimulate internal healing.

"After a car accident injury, patients may experience serious neck pain, back pain and headaches," said Dr. Lee. "Chiropractic adjustments can correct the underlying spinal misalignments that are triggering this pain. By integrating passive and active treatments into the recovery process, we are able to deliver enhanced pain relief for patients and bring a wider range of mobility back to the body faster."
