BOSTON, July 16, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Americans can now journey directly to Cuba from the United States. Road Scholar, the not-for-profit leader in lifelong learning, is unveiling an extraordinary voyage that allows Americans to sail a round-trip route from Miami to Cuba for the first time in more than five decades. This new 10-day adventure aboard a 200-passenger ship circumnavigates the entire island of Cuba to discover historic cities, national parks and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Havana, Maria la Gorda, Cienfuegos, Trinidad, Santiago, Alejandro de Humboldt National Park/Baracoa and Holguin with local experts.
Road Scholar was one of the first organizations in the U.S. to offer People-to-People programs to Cuba. Beginning in 2010, it has offered cultural programs for adults 50+, families, grandparents and their grandchildren and private groups. In all, more than 7,000 individual Americans have explored Cuba with Road Scholar, with thousands more enrolled in educational adventures for 2016.
"Because of the much-improved diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Cuba, Cuba has experienced significant changes in the past few months," said President and CEO James Moses. This new Adventures Afloat program, A Historic Voyage: Miami to Cuba by Sea, joins a growing list of Road Scholar educational adventures in Cuba that engage directly with Cuban people and explores arts, culture and free enterprise. It is operated in conjunction with Haimark Line, Ltd and United Caribbean Lines. The itinerary is subject to change and subject to final approval by the Office of Foreign Assets Commission (OFAC). The MS Saint Laurent is a 200-passenger ship that is ideal for exploring ports and islands that a larger vessel couldn't access.
